HK Derby winner retired

Ping Hai Star

Last year’s Hong Kong Derby (2000m) winner Ping Hai Star has been retired.

The John Size-trained gelding had been out for the majority of last season through a sesamoid issue and the decision has been made to bring the curtain down on his racing career.

“He’s been struggling for quite a long time, there was no sign of encouragement,” Size told the South China Morning Post.

Ping Hai Star was offered through Highden Park’s 2015 New Zealand Bloodstock Select Yearling Sale draft before he went on to win two races from three starts in Australia, where he raced as Ted, and was subsequently sold to Hong Kong.

He won six of his 12 career starts, placing in four others, and earnt nearly HK$16.8 million in prizemoney.
