Anyone looking to strengthen their broodmare stocks in the countdown to the 2022 breeding season needs to look no further than the National Online Broodmare Sale on Gavelhouse Plus, which offers a selection of quality mares with outstanding racetrack and pedigree credentials.
Highlights of the 81-lot catalogue include:
LOT 4 – ABIT IFFEY
A promising winner of two jumpouts, Iffraaj mare Abit Iffey (NZ) never had the chance to race due to a minor training injury. But she has a pedigree page stacked with interest and is carrying her first foal, by high-flying sire Per Incanto, whose progeny averaged over $130,000 in Book 1 of Karaka 2022.
Abit Iffey is a half-sister to Australian Group Three winner Tavernelle (Zabeel), herself the dam of Australian Group Two winner Tuscan Queen (Fastnet Rock).
Group One winner Zirna (NZ) (Deputy Governor) and recent Australian stakes winner Snickerdoodledandy (Snitzel) also feature on the catalogue page, and Zirna’s daughter Zing (Zoustar) was runner-up in this month’s Group Three Pam O’Neill Stakes (1600m) in Brisbane.
LOT 10 – ATACAMA
Bred and raced by Pencarrow Stud’s Sir Peter Vela, Atacama (NZ) (Pentire) was a high-class racemare who won Listed races on both sides of the Tasman in the spring of 2014 – firstly the Matamata Cup (1600m), and later the James Boag’s Premium Stakes (1800m) on Melbourne Cup Day at Flemington.
Also a multiple stakes placegetter up to Group Two level, Atacama had 23 starts overall for seven wins, five placings and over $250,000 in stakes.
The dam of one named foal to date – the winner Copiapino (NZ) (Medaglia d’Oro) – Atacama is in foal to the Frankel stallion Eminent, who was a Group Two winner in France and was a three-time Group One placegetter across both hemispheres.
Lot 13 – BONAICHI
A three-time winner on the racetrack including the Listed Bonecrusher Stakes (1400m), Bonaichi (Fusaichi Pegasus) has passed that ability down to her progeny with four winners, headed by the Listed Geelong Classic (2200m) winner Extra Choice (NZ) (Redoute’s Choice).
Bonaichi is by Kentucky Derby (2000m) winner Fusaichi Pegasus, who is the broodmare sire of no fewer than 10 winners at the elite level, including Golden Slipper (1200m) hero and star sire Capitalist (Written Tycoon), plus Blue Diamond (1200m) winner Catchy (Fastnet Rock).
Bonaichi is in foal to exciting young stallion Time Test.
Lot 15 – BRIANNA
In her own racing career, Brianna (NZ) (Sudurka) displayed blistering speed, winning five races over 1100 and 1200 metres including the Listed Counties Bowl (1100m). She was also a multiple black-type placegetter, including a third in the Group One Railway Handicap (1200m) in 2008.
A half-sister to stakes winner Centennial (NZ) (Centaine) and out of a stakes-winning mare, Brianna has also made her mark at stud with four winners from five foals to race. They include this season’s classy sprinter Can I Get An Amen (NZ) (Hallowed Crown), who won the Listed Lightning Handicap (1200m) at Trentham and finished fourth in a star-studded Group One Telegraph (1200m) over the same course and distance.
Another of Brianna’s progeny is Moana (NZ) (Ocean Park), who has placed in both the Group Two Hawke’s Bay Guineas (1400m) and the Group Two Eight Carat Classic (1600m).
In foal to quality Waikato Stud stallion Ocean Park (NZ), Brianna is carrying a full-sibling to Moana.
Lot 22 – DEE AND GEE
From relatively lowly beginnings with a purchase price of only $16,000 as a yearling at Karaka 2015, Dee And Gee (NZ) (Darci Brahma) developed into a stayer of real quality and durability.
From 61 starts, she won eight races and over $449,000 in stakes, headed by black-type victories in the Group Three New Zealand Cup (3200m) and Listed Metropolitan Trophy (2500m). She placed in another four stakes races and finished fourth in the Group One Auckland Cup (3200m).
Offered as a maiden mare ready for an early service in the 2022 breeding season, Dee And Gee is a daughter of emerging broodmare sire Darci Brahma (NZ). A familiar name near the top of New Zealand’s stallion premierships throughout the last decade, Darci Brahma is already the broodmare sire of 100 winners including black-type stars Only Words (NZ) (Sweynesse), Yaletown (Vancouver), Finance Tycoon (Written Tycoon), Palmetto (NZ) (Ghibellines) and Diss Is Dramatic (NZ) (Dissident).
Lot 31 – FLORIA
Being sold to dissolve a partnership, Floria (NZ) (Savabeel) ticks all boxes for a broodmare – elite racetrack performance, by a champion sire in Savabeel, out of a stakes-performed mare also by a champion sire (Aria (NZ), a Listed-placed daughter of Centaine), and from one of the New Zealand stud book’s iconic families.
Tracing back to the exceptional Solveig (NZ) (Imposing) and Soliloquy (NZ) (Sobig), Floria is a half-sister to the Australian Group Two performer Caped Crusader (NZ) (O’Reilly) and closely related to countless other black-type stars.
Floria earned over $600,000 in a 37-start racing career that featured five wins and 13 placings. She won the Group Two Brisbane Cup (2400m), the Group Three Summoned Stakes (1600m) at Caulfield and the Group Three Cuddle Stakes (1600m) at Trentham. Her 10 stakes placings included the Group One Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) and four Australian Group Two races.
Her four yearlings to hit the sale ring have netted a total of $1.2 million and include the two-race winner and Group Two Moonee Valley Vase (2040m) fourth placegetter Captain Corelli (NZ) (Tavistock).
Floria presents an outstanding opportunity for an early service in 2022.
Lot 32 – FOREVER AND EVER
Another high-quality broodmare being sold to dissolve a partnership, Forever And Ever (Monsun) boasts a perfect record of four winners from four runners – including trans-Tasman stakes performer (Our) Intrigue (NZ) (Showcasing).
Forever And Ever’s four foals to race have so far recorded 13 wins between them, with Our Intrigue providing five of those victories from 33 starts to date. She has earned over $500,000, with five stakes placings including the Group Two Championship Stakes (2100m) at Ellerslie, the Group Two Matriarch Stakes (2000m) at Flemington and the Group Three Chairman’s Handicap (2143m) at Eagle Farm.
Herself unraced, Forever And Ever is out of the Group One Prix de Diane (2200m) runner-up Time Ahead (Spectrum) and is closely related to numerous other elite-level performers.
Forever And Ever’s sire Monsun has made his presence felt in our part of the world through his Melbourne Cup (3200m) winners Fiorente, Almandin and Protectionist, and he is also the sire of emerging Rich Hill Stud stallion Vadamos, who is New Zealand’s leading second-season sire.
Forever And Ever is in foal to Ocean Park (NZ).
Lot 41 – IL QUELLO VELOCE
Buyers have a prized Group One opportunity in the form of Il Quello Veloce (NZ) (Captain Rio), who was New Zealand’s champion two-year-old of her generation and triumphed in the Group One Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m).
From a total of 24 starts, Il Quello Veloce recorded five wins and seven placings for almost $500,000 in stakes. She also won the Group Three (now Group Two) Manawatu Challenge Stakes (1400m), and she was beaten by a nose when second in the Group One New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m). She also placed in another five Group races, including a third placing in the Group One Diamond Stakes (1200m).
While only one of Il Quello Veloce’s foals has raced so far, two of them have gone on to success in the broodmare barn – Beyond Rare (Redoute’s Choice) and The Quick One (Redoute’s Choice) are the dams of two winners each.
Il Quello Veloce is currently in foal to exciting young stallion U S Navy Flag.
Lot 71 – SHEEZALLMINE
Retired from racing this season, Sheezallmine (NZ) (Super Easy) made a real impact on the track in her 23-start career.
Sheezallmine recorded six wins and three placings, amassing over $177,000 in stakes. She was a two-time stakes winner, capturing the Group Three Stewards’ Stakes (1200m) at Riccarton and the Listed Hazlett Stakes (1200m) at Wingatui, and she also ran second in the Listed Pegasus Stakes (1000m). She finished fourth in another three Group Three races.
Other notable lots include the Group One-placed Blinding (NZ) (Black Minnaloushe), stakes-winning mares Lady Zafira (NZ) (Iffraaj) and Lamington Vegas (NZ) (Elusive City), and Group One producer Kate Cross (NZ) (Cape Cross) – the dam of Consensus (NZ) (Postponed).
Dancing Attendance (Danehill Dancer), Devour (NZ) (Bachelor Duke), Downton Abbey (NZ) (Tavistock), Lady Kartel (NZ) (Tavistock) and Misstrum (Stratum) all placed at stakes level on the racetrack.
Entirely Saintly (NZ) (Pentire) and Jungle Pago (NZ) (Darci Brahma) are both dams of Group Two winners in Australia, producing The Holy One (NZ) (Tavistock) and Only Words (Sweynesse) respectively.
Grey Swallow (NZ) (Pentire), Miss Montjeu (NZ) (Montjeu) and Princess Latifah (Flying Spur) have all produced Listed winners, while Patrimonium (Green Desert) has been represented by Group placegetters Live And Free (NZ) (Savabeel) and Clementina (NZ) (Savabeel).
Covering sires include Ace High, Almanzor, Anders, Circus Maximus, Darci Brahma (NZ), Derryn, Eminent, Ocean Park (NZ), Per Incanto, Preferment (NZ), Proisir, Reliable Man, Ribchester, Shalaa, Shocking, Super Seth, Sweynesse, Tarzino (NZ), Telperion, Time Test, Tivaci, Turn Me Loose (NZ), U S Navy Flag, Vadamos, Vanbrugh and Zed (NZ).
