An integral member of the New Zealand Bloodstock team for many years, the breeding industry was thrilled when it was annouced that Kane Jones had been appointed the role of Bloodstock Sales Manager in February of this year. We recently learnt that not only does Kane have a keen eye for fine Throughbreds, but also for fine art in this weeks edition of 60 Seconds With – Kane Jones!
1.How did you first get involved in the breeding industry?
My parents usually had a few mares and racehorses at home, so I basically grew up around horses and developed an interest from a young age. I always enjoyed studying pedigrees and reading the annual stallion register.
2.What made you decide to become a Bloodstock Sales Manager?
I’m passionate about Bloodstock and consider myself a reasonably good people-person. When the opportunity arose, it was the next logical step in my career, and I was incredibly grateful to be entrusted with the role.
3.What is one interesting thing most people wouldn’t know about you?
When I was 3 years old, I was kicked in the face by a broodmare. Thankfully it didn’t put me off horses!
4.What would be your first purchase if you won lotto?
I would love to buy a handful of well-bred fillies at Karaka and try to win the 1000 Guineas or Oaks.
5.What motivates you to work hard?
My parents always worked hard and have been amazing role models. It’s always very satisfying to work hard and enjoy the results of it. I like the saying, “the harder you work, the luckier you become.”
6.If you could choose anything at all to do for one day, what would it be and why?
I’d love to attend the JRHA Select Foal Sale in Japan – it looks absolutely phenomenal! I’d also love to go back to the Museum of Modern Art in New York. I’ve been once and it was like going to Disneyland!
7.Most memorable horse you have ever worked with?
Alpha Pukeko was the first horse I raced with my parents. He won 6 races and was a pretty handy sprinter. Our family enjoyed some wonderful thrills with him.
8.What is your favorite thing about working in the Breeding industry?
I love the allure of breeding a Group One winner. It’s what everyone dreams of, and the best thing is they can come from absolutely anywhere. The Thoroughbred is a beautiful animal and it’s a pleasure to have a career working with them.
9.If you could invite 3 people to dinner living or deceased, who would you invite and why?
My Poppa because he passed away when I was relatively young. Salvador Dali because of my passion for art. He was incredibly interesting and an eccentric character and would certainly keep things lively. Also, my future wife, I just don’t know who she is yet! (Ladies – you heard it here first!)
10.What piece advice would you give someone looking to enter the Thoroughbred industry?
Work hard, take pride in whatever you are doing and never be afraid to ask questions!
