Five-year-old mare West Wind (NZ) (Pins) made it three wins in a row when leading all the way in the MSC Signs Handicap (2040m) at Moonee Valley on Friday night under jockey John Allen.
The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained mare has been a model of consistency and advanced her record to six wins from 11 starts with a further three placings.
“She is an absolute star, she is so game,” Eustace said.
“Johnny is riding her beautifully. He got the fractions spot on in front and she was the obvious leader. They let him go and he kicked on her at the right time.”
The daughter of Pins sports the colours of the Chittick family’s Waikato Stud.
“Waikato Stud bred her and there is a really good bunch who lease her. We had a Zoom call beforehand and they’ll be absolutely rocking. It’s a great result,” Eustace said.
A sibling to stakes winners Whistling Dixie and Atmosphere, West Wind will now be aimed at a black-type race over the Flemington carnival.
“There’s two races as options for her,” Eustace said. “There is an 1800 metre listed race to get that black type over the Flemington carnival or the Matriarch (Gr.2, 2000m) is a possibility – it would be a huge step up but she’s earned her shot at black type, hasn’t she.”
