Showmanship (NZ) (Showcasing) produced an amazing finishing burst to win the final race at Caulfield on Saturday.
The seven-start veteran looked an unlikely winner when he was back near the tail as the field turned for home in the Hyland Race Colours Handicap (1400m) till jockey William Pike got to work on the emerging horse and he thundered to the line to score what could prove an ominous win.
Co-trainer Grant Williams admitted to some concerns on the home turn.
“It looked a bit scary there for a little bit,” he said “But the horse goes really good and he’s fitted in really well over here and I’m relieved to see him run like that.
“We’ve got plans for him but obviously things are a bit up in the air at the moment but hopefully we can go to a listed race or something next because we want to try and put him out there a little bit.”
Showmanship, who took his record to seven runs for six wins, started the hot $2.05 favourite. His finishing burst was timed to perfection as he ran by Travimyfriend (NZ) (Tavistock).
Bred by Haunui Farm, Showmanship was sold through their 2017 New Zealand Bloodstock Select yearling draft to bloodstock agent John Chalmers for $145,000.
