Trainer Allan Sharrock has confirmed his pocket-rocket Tavi Mac (NZ) (Tavistock) will have his next start in the Gr.1 JR & N Berkett Telegraph (1200m) at Trentham on January 16.
The Tavistock five-year-old has won his last three races in a row culminating in a comfortable victory in the Gr.2 Manawatu Challenge Stakes (1400m) at Awapuni last month.
Nicknamed “Frodo” by his adoring fans due to his unique stature, Tavi Mac has pleased Sharrock with his recovery from his latest exertions.
“He’ll run in the Telegraph next,” Sharrock said.
“He’s bounced back from his last run, put bodyweight on and worked on the course proper this morning (Monday) like a caged lion.
“He’s got a massive job ahead of him to beat the mare (Avantage) but there was a Seabiscuit movie, so maybe there might be one about little Frodo.”
Sharrock was referring to five-time Group One winner Avantage who took out the Gr.1 Sistema Railway (1200m) at Ellerslie last week and is the defending champion in the Telegraph after defeating Enzo’s Lad in 2020. Avantage heads the Fixed Odds market for the race at a quote of $1.60 with Tavi Mac a clear second favourite at $4.
