The Kim Waugh-trained Trumbull (NZ) (Darci Brahma) landed his biggest win to date when taking out the A$500,000 Gr.3 Sydney Stakes (1200m).
The five-year-old gelding covered plenty of ground but showed a ready turn of foot in the run to the post to deny Standout (Exceed and Excel) and Signore Fox (Exceed and Excel).
The A$1 million The Hunter (1300m) at Newcastle next month looks another lucrative target for the son of Darci Brahma, who has a good record when kept fresh.
Jockey Tommy Berry reunited with the Listed Civic Stakes (1350m) winner to make it a hat-trick of wins on the day taking out The Everest consolation race on the $14 chance from Wyong.
“He went fantastic. He jumped with them and that’s all we want him to do,” Waugh said of the noted slow beginner.
“He was three deep no cover and I was very worried, But Tommy was so patient with him and he’s just a very good horse.
“If he can just keep jumping (from the barriers), he can keep winning.”
Waugh said the team would see how the horse came through the win before making next-up plans, but that the million dollars on offer in The Hunter 2020 on November 14 was very tempting.
A three-quarter brother to Group Two winner Hard Merchandize (NZ) (Burgundy), Trumbull is out of the Encosta de Lago mare Pride And Passion and was bred by Hunterville breeder Chris Grace QSM.
With seven wins and eight placings from 20 starts, Trumbull has now won A$628,110 in prizemoney.
Trumbull is one of 48 stakes winners for The Oaks Stud stallion Darci Brahma, who sires 7.4 percent stakes winners to runners, and the sire will be represented by three colts in the forthcoming NZB Ready To Run Sale on November 18 and 19.
