Fresh but fit, that’s the way trainer Graham Richardson wants to head into the Gr.1 Sistema Railway (1200m) at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day with previous race winner Volpe Veloce.
The daughter of Foxwedge will head into the race in that manner after her hit-out in a 1200m trial at Te Aroha on Monday, which she won by a neck.
“It was a very nice trial,” Richardson said. “I told Michael (McNab, jockey) not to do too much on her, I’d rather she went into the Railway fit but fresh.
“She got squeezed up at the start, so they were back last and she did a little bit from the 600m to home. We gave her a bit of a firmer trial than her last trial.
“Michael was stoked and I was happy. She did what we asked her to do and she had a good blow.
“She will definitely improve more on that and hopefully she will be cherry ripe for January 1.”
