In an industry not known for its praise, the Cambridge Jockey Club and New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing should be congratulated for applying some nous and moving the trials, initially planned for Tuesday, to Monday due to a poor weather forecast.
It is the second time this call has been made in recent months and on both occasions the decision has been vindicated, with forecast heavy rain eventuating on Tuesday.
With 254 horses going around on Monday across 30 heats, the demand was clearly there to trial on decent footing and had it been left until Tuesday, the likely scenario is the trials would have been abandoned.
